Why Do Philosophers Use Thought Experiments?

I’ve encountered many people who don’t understand why philosophers often use thought experiments (e.g., the trolley problem) to make their points. These hypotheticals are almost always oversimplified and unrealistic. So why use them? How can they improve our understanding of the world?
